Alix teaches group singing classes specifically tailored to meet the needs of homeschooled students. At her home studio in Silver Spring, MD, students learn healthy singing habits and basic music theory in a fun, age-appropriate environment. Older students also learn ensemble skills and are exposed to the breadth and beauty of choral repertoire. This class serves as a first introduction to healthy singing, ear training, and music literacy. Students will build a strong foundation in rhythm and pitch accuracy, will gain familiarity with the musical staff, and will establish good singing habits that will allow them to sing freely and healthily throughout their lives. Each class will include fun vocal warmups, some quick work in our workbooks and music theory games, and time spent singing music together. Music is specifically tailored to this age group and to support the musical concepts that we’ll be learning.

This class serves as a first introduction to healthy singing, ear training, and music literacy, but moves at a slightly faster pace than the Crickets. Students will build a strong foundation in pitch accuracy, will gain familiarity with the musical staff and note durations, and will establish good singing habits that will allow them to sing freely and healthily throughout their lives. By the end of the course, students will be able to sight-sing simple C major melodies and sing basic harmonies. Each class will include fun vocal warmups, some quick work in our workbooks and music theory games, and time spent singing music together. Music is specifically tailored to this age group and to support the musical concepts that we’ll be learning.

This class teaches the fundamental skills necessary to have a fun and successful experience in a choral setting. Students will learn healthy singing technique, solfège and basic intervals, reading music, diction, and ensemble skills such as blend, stagger breathing, and harmonization. Short listening assignments will expose students to the breadth of sounds and styles in the choral world. Students from this class may be invited to join the homeschool choir, which will be offered in a future term.

Students will learn and rehearse a short concert program to be performed during an end-of-term recital. Singers will be exposed to a diverse set of choral repertoire, which may include folk songs, popular songs, secular and sacred choral standards from a variety of traditions, as well as contemporary choral music. Each program will include at least one non-English selection, with diction and pronunciation coaching.
